If I remember my high school books correctly , tantalum caps are actually a type of electrolytic capacitors just with different purpose and their size to capacitance ratio is much better than the electrolytic ones.
Tantalum and Tantalum Polymer capacitors are suitable for energy storage applications because they are very efficient in achieving high CV. For example, for case sizes ranging from EIA 1206 (3.2mm x 1.6mm) to an EIA 2924 (7.3mm x 6.1mm), it is quite easy to achieve capacitance ratings from 100μF to 2.2mF, respectively.
Tantalum and TaPoly capacitor dielectrics are formed by dipping a very porous pellet of sintered Tantalum grains (anode) in an acid bath followed by a process of electrolysis (see figure 2). The oxide (Ta2O5) layer thickness contributes a great amount to the device voltage handling and its overall reliability.
There exist two primary categories of energy storage capacitors: dielectric capacitors and supercapacitors. Dielectric capacitors encompass film capacitors, ceramic dielectric capacitors, and electrolytic capacitors, whereas supercapacitors can be further categorized into double-layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors, and hybrid capacitors.
Chen et al. utilized metallic glass (MG) as a binder to adhere Ta powder at low temperatures (513 K), yielding MG-Ta composites. When applied in tantalum electrolytic capacitors, these composites exhibited a 57% increase in specific capacitance compared with pure Ta materials, accompanied by a 32% enhancement in mechanical properties. 2.2.1.
Tantalum capacitors should not be used for audio coupling capacitors in high performance audio circuits, as their capacitance value can vary within audio range based upon bias voltage and current. This can be a source of distortion. Solid aluminum electrolytics generally have less of this effect.
