Turning it off when not in use is probably a good idea in an area where power outages are common, though it's probably not really helping. It certainly won't hurt. Power outages here are uncommon, and I essentially never turn mine off.
1. Turn off all switches (except one!) The first thing you should aim to do during a power outage is turn off all switches, electronics, and electrical equipment around your home. Doing so will reduce the risk of your household experiencing a power surge once your power comes back on.
However, turning them off and on again plus repeatedly flipping the switch can cause an electrical hazard or at the very least, some damage. The best thing to do is to leave it as is during a power outage. Having said though, circuit breakers will automatically shut off, especially if there is already an overload.

Keep it in a dry spot away from water. If using a solar-powered unit, take care that you do not damage the battery, which can leak toxins.
