VISHAY INTERTECHNOLOGY, INC. Vishay supplies surface mount molded and conformal coated solid tantalum capacitors with MnO2 and polymer cathode constructions. The conformal coated devices meet moisture sensitivity level rating (MSL) of 2a as specified in IPC / JEDEC® J-STD-020E and are dry packaged in moisture barrier bags (MBB) per J-STD-033.
Moisture can penetrate through polymer encapsulating materials degrading characteristics of the solid electrolyte, cathode attachment materials, and tantalum pentoxide dielectric, and causing failures of the capacitors.
Moisture-related degradation of materials used in tantalum capacitors, failure mechanisms, and the effectiveness of the existing moisture resistance qualification testing are discussed. 1. Introduction. Surface mount solid tantalum capacitors used in military and aerospace applications are typically manufactured in non-hermetic plastic cases.
To remove excess moisture, capacitors can be dried at 40 °C for 168 h (standard “dry box” conditions). For detailed recommendations, please refer to J-STD-033. Conformal coated series: 591D, 592D, 592W, 195D, 695D, 594D, 595D, 597D, T95, T96, T97, T98, 13008, and 14002.
The current reliability criterion (RC) of the film capacitor (FC) is usually a fixed value, which does not consider the staged capacitance loss caused by moisture diffusion under high temperature and/or high humidity. The expected lifetime of capacitors would deviate far from the actual one.
Additional testing of tantalum capacitors, research of moisture-induced degradation processes in used materials, and analysis of accelerated factors of the degradation processes are necessary to develop qualification techniques, which would assure reliability of the parts in moisture environments.
