This type of electricity storage is usually referred to as behind-the-meter (BTM) storage because it is located downstream of the connection point between the utility and the customer. The main benefit of BTM storage is to maximise self-consumption of renewable energy.
Duration, which refers to the average amount of energy that can be (dis)charged for each kW of power capacity, will be chosen optimally depending on the underlying generation profile and the price premium for stored energy. The economies of scale inherent in systems with longer durations apply to any energy storage system.

An up-to-date overview of BESS grid services is provided for the last 10 years. Indicators are proposed to describe long-term battery grid service usage patterns.
