DOHA, Qatar – Qatar Airways has become the second airline in the world to become IATA CEIV Lithium Battery certified and Qatar Aviation Services is the first ground handling company to be certified globally. The certification aims to improve safety in handling and transportation of lithium batteries throughout the supply chain.
In addition, passengers may still transport their battery-powered devices and spare batteries in their carry-on bags. Plus, all lithium batteries may still be compliantly transported on cargo-only aircraft, subject to regulations.
The aircraft could also benefit from a wider temperature of operation, especially at high temperatures, and the batteries also need to be more inherently safe than their land-based equivalents, as the dangers of an in-flight fire are more serious than one on the ground.
In addition, lithium-ion cells and batteries shipped by themselves must be shipped at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity. Lithium batteries are dangerous goods, and all of the regulatory requirements must be complied with, as set out in the Lithium Battery Shipping Regulations.
