Electrochemical capacitors bridge the energy gap between conventional dielectric capacitors and batteries. The energy storage mechanism relies on purely physical electrical double-layer charging (EDL) and the faradaic process involving fast electrochemical redox reactions.
This scenario analysis also reveals that the production cost of green ethylene at three times the current market price of (fossil-based) ethylene corresponds to a rather favourable scenario, due in large part to the skewed distributions of LCOE, stack cost and oxygen price.
The price of green ethylene at three times or more its current market price is confirmed through a sensitivity analysis varying the levelised cost of electricity, stack cost, and market price of propylene or oxygen simultaneously.
Outside Europe, the Western US might offer suitable conditions for a similar LCOEt as in the UK (Fig. 3), but given that fossil-based ethylene in the US is less than half the price on the European market, 126 green ethylene would be even less competitive on the US market.
Even compared to a high market price of £1400 t C2H4−1 (recorded in April 2022) 109 and after taxing the CO 2 emissions of a conventional ethane cracker (c. £300 t C2H4−1 at 0.97 t CO2 t C2H4−1), the predicted green ethylene prices are far from being competitive with fossil-based ethylene.
