A new, second generation BYD blade battery for electric vehicles (EVs) was announced by Chinese EV industry leader BYD. The innovative next gen battery will be lighter and more compact compared to the first generation BYD blade, while increasing range significantly.
Now, BYD wants to improve on its already successful battery design with something that’s better in pretty much every way. According to BYD’s chairman Wang Chuanfu, the new blade battery will have more efficient power consumption so its future EVs get better range and performance.
“I think in the coming years, 2025, BYD will introduce the new generation of our remarkable blade battery,” Cao said during the interview. According to BYD’s executive, the new batteries promise to “enhance the driving distance of our vehicles.” Cao added that they will also have a longer life cycle for various reuse cases.
The BYD Blade battery was planned to be used in select cars, but now BYD has deployed the tech in multiple models and brands, including the BYD Tang EV, BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, BYD Dolphin, BYD Seagull, and the BYD Sealion 7. The BYD Blade battery technology was under development for several years, at least since 2017.
This improves energy density and allows more batteries in a compact space, with a longer driving range. The 'honeycomb-like aluminum' design of the Blade Battery also provides greater rigidity and safety. The BYD TANG, BYD HAN and BYD ATTO 3 are all equipped with a Blade Battery.
