Most of China's solar power is generated within its western provinces and is transferred to other regions of the country. In 2011, China owned the largest solar power plant in the world at the time, the Huanghe Hydropower Golmud Solar Park, which had a photovoltaic capacity of 200 MW.
In 2021–2022 alone, China has introduced more than 10 support policies to encourage innovation in the development of the photovoltaic industry. Driven by government policy support and improved industry technology, China is gradually developing into one of the world's most important markets for solar PV applications.
Regarding the installation, China is striving to lead that as well. The Renewable Energy Agency's updated report shows that solar PV installation increased from 72 GW in 2011 to more than 1 TW by the end of 2022 (IRENA, 2022b). China's share in production increased from 60 % in 2010 to almost 80 % in 2021.
Photovoltaic research in China began in 1958 with the development of China's first piece of monocrystalline silicon. Research continued with the development of solar cells for space satellites in 1968. The Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences led this research for a year, stopping after batteries failed to operate.
As of at least 2024, China has one third of the world's installed solar panel capacity. Most of China's solar power is generated within its western provinces and is transferred to other regions of the country.
As of 2021, China's total installed PV power generation capacity reached about 306 GW, with 58.88 GW of new PV power generation installed, up 22.2% year on year, and has now become the world's top country in terms of new installed PV power generation capacity.
