Amin solar power plant in Oman. Image by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals Oman has kicked off a tender to award the development of the next large-scale solar project in the Sultanate -- the 500-MW Ibri III Solar PV IPP.
The realisation of the project will cost about OMR 155 million (USD 402.6m/EUR 367.7m) in investment. Ibri II, Oman's first 500-MW solar project, was inaugurated at the beginning of 2022. In addition, the Arab country is advancing the development of the 500-MW Manah I and 500-MW Manah II solar projects.
Nama Power and Water Procurement (PWP), the sole offtaker of electricity from independent power plants in Oman, on Tuesday issued a request for qualification (RFQ) targeting investors interested in the development of the fourth solar project in the country with a capacity of 500 MW at Ibri, northwest Oman.
Ibri III is slated for commissioning in the last quarter of 2026. Oman has selected nine prequalified applicants for the development of the 500-MW Ibri III solar power project with an estimated investment of OMR 155 million (USD 402m/EUR 377m).
The proposed solar PV project, with a capacity of 500 MW, is planned for implementation on a 10 million m2 site adjacent to the existing Ibri II Solar PV project in Al Dhahirah Governorate.
Ahmed bin Salim al Abri, Acting CEO of Nama PWP, emphasized Oman’s ambitious goal of increasing renewable energy capacity and the project’s contribution to the green economy and sustainable energy production.
