SSE has officially launched construction on its largest battery storage project to date, a 320MW battery energy storage system (BESS) located at Monk Fryston in North Yorkshire. This facility is among the largest of its kind in the UK and is expected to power over 533,000 homes for up to two hours during periods of peak demand.
The four longer-duration energy storage demonstration projects will help to achieve the UK’s plan for net zero by balancing the intermittency of renewable energy, creating more options for sustainable, low-cost energy storage in the UK.
A ceremony to mark the start of construction works on the 320MW facility took place on Tuesday 8th October with representatives from SSE Renewables, principal contractors Morrison Energy Services, and energy storage supplier Sungrow, in attendance.
SSE’s first operational battery storage facility at Salisbury (50MW) entered full operations earlier this year, with a further two projects in construction at Ferrybridge (150MW) and Fiddler’s Ferry (150MW). With work at Monk Fryston now underway, construction is expected to be completed by early 2026.

SSE Renewables’ Solar and Battery portfolio currently comprises four projects in delivery in the UK totalling 550MW, including: a 50MW BESS site in Salisbury, a 150MW BESS site in Ferrybridge, a 30MW solar farm in Littleton, and now a 320MW BESS site at Monk Fryston.
