Zambia's power utility, ZESCO Limited, invites expressions of interest from EPC companies for the development of a 7.5MW on-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Kasupe, Lusaka. The project aims to enhance the country's energy mix, leveraging renewable sources, with construction set to commence in Q2 2024.
In Zambia, the World Bank is planning to produce 500 MW as part of the “Scaling Solar” project. In the same vein, Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of the Italian company Enel, is currently building a 28 MW solar park in Ngonye, a dynamic economic area south of Lusaka, Zambia’s capital. The project is owned by Enel (80%) and IDC (20%).
The 34 MW Ngonye solar photovoltaic plant is the Enel Green Power’s first power plant in Zambia. The PV facility, which is located in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone in the country’s south, is part of the World Bank Group’s Scaling Solar program.
Moreover, the cost of solar panels has significantly decreased in recent years, making solar power systems one of the most cost-effective means of electricity generation, even on a small scale. Zambia has ample year-round sunshine for the generation of solar power as shown in the map below.
“To date, there has only been one procurement round in Zambia leading to projects achieving commercial operations – The Scaling Solar Program – which was managed by the IDC in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC),” he says.
The Solar Project, costing $89 million, represents a significant step in embracing sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions. In addition to solar, ZESCO is actively exploring nuclear and geo-thermal sources as part of its long-term energy strategy.
