For example, harmonic power for shunt capacitor at node 675a of 13-bus RDS for the most prominent harmonic order (i.e., 7th) is 0.0374 pu, which is 93.5% of the fundamental reactive power of the capacitor.
A shunt capacitor is extensively used to transmit reactive power to loads in the main distribution. These capacitors supply an economical reactive power to meet up reactive power necessities for different loads. The transmission, as well as distribution lines, operates at lagging PF (power factor) to reduce line losses & enhance voltage regulation.
In this paper, an analytical assessment of non-sinusoidal reactive power of shunt capacitors in the presence of substation voltage harmonics in radial distribution systems has been attempted. The paper proposes a novel technique of assessing harmonic amplification in shunt capacitor banks due to distorted substation voltage.
Flow of harmonic currents in distorted distribution systems are known to be more detrimental as compared to fundamental frequency reactive currents. The undesirable effects of harmonic currents become more pronounced in the presence of shunt capacitors – primarily due to harmonic amplification caused by the capacitors in distribution systems.
Detailed assessment of non-sinusoidal reactive power of shunt capacitors has been carried out as per IEEE-1459-2010 Standard. A significant contribution of above mathematical analysis is the prediction of harmonic amplification and capacitor overloading for various harmonic orders.
Consequently, shunt capacitor banks are extensively used in distribution systems for power factor correction, voltage control, reactive power compensation and system capacity release .
