The progress of anode-free lithium metal batteries over past two decades are reviewed. The prospects and obstacles for the development of anode-free batteries are outlined. The feasibility and limitations of the state-of-the-art anode-free designs are analyzed.
Inhomogeneous lithium deposition poses a significant challenge in optimizing anode-free lithium metal batteries, threatening battery structural integrity and cycling behavior. Addressing this issue requires focused modifications of current collectors, which are crucial for lithium plating.
