The maximum theoretical efficiency of the CdTe solar cell corresponding to a band gap of 1.5 eV is about 28%–30%. CdTe has long been known as a leading thin film photovoltaic material due to its near optimal direct bandgap of 1.44 eV and high absorption coefficient.
A validation study of an experimental CdTe-based conventional solar cell was analyzed and discussed. The comparison was performed with a series resistance of 4.5 Ω cm 2 and a shunt resistance of 1010 Ω cm 2. We achieved a 21% efficiency, which is consistent with previously published experimental results.
This makes CdTe solar cells a strong competitor in the photovoltaic market owing to their high efficiency, low material consumption, cost-effective fabrication process, and other attributes . The theoretical efficiency of CdTe solar cells is approximately 30% .
For reference, the detailed balance-limiting power conversion efficiency η of a 1.5 eV CdTe solar cell at 300 K is 32.0% whereas at 360 K it is 29.8%.
