Cell Fabrication – Silicon wafers are then fabricated into photovoltaic cells. The first step is chemical texturing of the wafer surface, which removes saw damage and increases how much light gets into the wafer when it is exposed to sunlight.
Once these electrical contacts are placed on the cells’ exposed areas, thin strips of tin-coated copper are placed between cells. A titanium dioxide or silicon oxide anti-reflective coating is put into the silicon wafer to minimize the amount of sunlight lost when pure silicon reflects it.
The production process from raw quartz to solar cells involves a range of steps, starting with the recovery and purification of silicon, followed by its slicing into utilizable disks – the silicon wafers – that are further processed into ready-to-assemble solar cells.
Wire sawing will remain the dominant method of producing crystalline wafers for solar cells, at least for the near future. Recent research efforts have kept their focus on reducing the wafer thickness and kerf, with both approaches aiming to produce the same amount of solar cells with less silicon material usage.
Another relevant field of research is the reduction of the wafer thickness in order to produce more wafers per kilogram silicon. Finally, the wafering process step, in combination with the material quality, defines the mechanical properties of the final solar cell, as the wafering process can damage the wafer’s surface.
Though less common, kerfless wafer production can be accomplished by pulling cooled layers off a molten bath of silicon, or by using gaseous silicon compounds to deposit a thin layer of silicon atoms onto a crystalline template in the shape of a wafer. Cell Fabrication – Silicon wafers are then fabricated into photovoltaic cells.
