The draft guidelines say India has on-river pumped storage potential of 103 GW. The Union Ministry of Power has come out with draft guidelines on pumped hydro storage projects, announced in the recent Union Budget, with a view to generate over 18 gigawatt (GW) of electricity to bring stability to grids and meet the peaking power demand by 2032.
In pumped hydro storage projects (PHPs) water is pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation using low-cost surplus off-peak electric power to run the pumps. The draft guidelines say India has on-river pumped storage potential of 103 GW.
