Open-circuit voltage (V OC) in organic solar cells (OSCs) is currently still not well-understood. A generally acceptable view is that V OC is mainly determined by the energy level offset between donor and acceptor materials. Recently in ternary blend OSCs, V OC is found to be dependent on the blend composition.
The external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the solar cells was observed using CEP-25RR Bunkoukeiki. The Eg values of the absorbers of the thin-film solar cells were then estimated from the first EQE derivative [ 13, 22 ]. The V OC,def was calculated by VOC,def = Eg /q - VOC.
It is known that the EU has the influence on the carrier mobility and lifetime, affecting cell performances [1, 20, 21 ], and open-circuit deficit ( VOC,def) of thin-film solar cells [ 22, 23 ]. The VOC,def is determined by Eg /q - VOC, and managed by the carrier recombination and the absorber quality [ 22, 23 ].
In addition, the relation between the JSC and EU of the thin-film solar cells is not clearly shown since the JSC is mainly influenced by the Eg of the thin-film absorbers. On the other hand, the EU has the significant impact on the VOC (or VOC,def) and FF, where the reduced EU yields the increases in the VOC (or reduced VOC,def) and FF.
The EU of over 20 meV, observed in the CIGS, CTS, CTGS, SnS, and CZTSSe solar cells, gives rise to the high VOC,def and the low conversion efficiency ( η) values. The EU of below 20 meV, seen in the CIGSe, CIGSSe, PVK, and CdTe solar cells, leads to the low VOC,def and high η values.
Urbach energy ( EU) is estimated from external quantum efficiency. Relation between VOC,def and EU is investigated among thin-film solar cells. Decrease in EU decreases VOC,def, thus increasing conversion efficiency. EU of below 20 meV is of importance to realize high photovoltaic performances.
