As identified in the 2019 IEA report Nuclear Power in a Clean Energy System and confirmed in this report, life extension of existing nuclear power plants can be a highly cost effective investment opportunity for low-carbon generation.
Investment in electricity networks edged down, although investment in battery storage surged by 45% from a relatively low base. Investment in coal-fired power declined by nearly 3% to its lowest level since 2004, mainly due to lower spending in China and India.
Despite a generally stable profile for overall investment, a dollar of renewables spending continues to buy more capacity than in the past. Adjusting the time series to 2018 cost levels shows a rising trend over time, with renewables investment activity up by 55% since 2010.
In the United States, power investment rose by 7% in 2018. Gas-power investment fell from near five-year highs while renewables (two-thirds of generation spending) jumped 16%, with deployment driven by falling costs in solar PV and wind, the availability of federal tax credits, state portfolio standards, and corporate procurement.
