Rechargeable batteries with anodes made of sodium metal are promising energy-storage systems. But such devices typically use highly flammable liquid electrolytes, which can cause the batteries to catch fire or explode, and sodium-metal-based batteries containing solid electrolytes tend to have an inferior performance.
