When a standard exists as a British standard (BS) based on a European (EN or HD) standard, the BS version is referenced. The scope of the energy storage system standards includes both industrial large-scale energy storage systems as well as domestic energy storage systems. Appendix 1 includes a summary of applicable international standards for domestic battery energy storage systems (BESSs).
A domestic battery energy storage system (BESS) will be part of the electrical installation in residential buildings. Examples of standards that cover electrical installations in residential buildings are shown in Table A 2. The HD 60364 series is a harmonization document from CENELEC.
Internationally developed standards are often mirrored by the BSI in the UK and so become UK standards. They form the bulk of the technical standards related to energy storage. They are developed through relevant working groups in organisations such as the IEC, CENELEC, or ISO and present international consensus on what standards should apply.
As the industry for battery energy storage systems (BESS) has grown, a broad range of H&S related standards have been developed. There are national and international standards, those adopted by the British Standards Institution (BSI) or published by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), CENELEC, ISO, etc.
