The Global Solar Power Tracker is a worldwide dataset of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal facilities. It covers all operating solar farm phases with capacities of 1 megawatt (MW) or more and all announced, pre-construction, construction, and shelved projects with capacities greater than 20 MW.
The most studied tracker is an azimuth-altitude dual-axis solar tracking system. This type of solar tracker can capture more sunlight during the day, which results in higher energy output. Such a tracker can automatically adapt to seasonal changes in the tilt of the Sun, which is a great advantage compared to other types.
When designing solar tracking systems, it is necessary to take into account the distance between installations, since when the position of the Sun changes, the size of the trackers' shadow changes. This problem has several solutions. First: you need to install the trackers at a sufficient distance from each other.
Secondly, you need to choose according to the control type: manual or passive tracker, automated or active tracker. Naturally active solar trackers are more efficient than passive solar trackers in many ways: high tracking accuracy, much less human labor, energy efficiency, resistance to climate change, etc.
The results of our study not only provide an overview of existing technologies but also suggest methods for improving solar trackers. The developed solar tracker selection algorithm can be useful for designers and engineers seeking to maximize the efficiency of solar power plants in various climatic and geographical conditions.
