Lower costs, higher capacity, and optimal utilization of scarce natural resources are expected to play a major role in taking the mission forward. Helping to realize the goal, a group of researchers at the University of Sydney has come up with a sodium-sulfur battery with a significantly higher capacity than lithium-ion cells.
The new sodium-sulfur batteries are also environmentally friendly, driving the clean energy mission forward at a low cost. To realize the universal goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, the world is keenly looking at advancements in battery technology.
“Our sodium battery has the potential to dramatically reduce costs while providing four times as much storage capacity. This is a significant breakthrough for renewable energy development which, although reduces costs in the long term, has had several financial barriers to entry,” said Dr. Zhao in a release.
Australian and international researchers have successfully fabricated and tested a lab-scale sodium-sulphur battery that potentially has four times less energy capacity than lithium-ion battery, but is cheaper to produce. The group was led by Dr Shenlong Zhao from the University of Sydney.
A typical sodium-ion battery has an energy density of about 150 watt-hours per kilogram at the cell level, he said. Lithium-ion batteries can range from about 180 to nearly 300 watt-hours per kilogram. I asked Srinivasan what he makes of CATL’s claim of a sodium-ion battery with 200 watt-hours per kilogram.
But sodium-ion batteries have some disadvantages. The big one is low energy density compared to lithium-ion. As a result, an EV running on a sodium-ion battery will go fewer miles per charge than a lithium-ion battery of the same size. “That is just what nature has given us,” Srinivasan said.
