Stellantis and Chinese battery maker CATL will invest 4.1 billion euros ($4.33 billion) to build one of Europe's largest electric vehicle battery factories in Spain, encouraged by lower costs and government funding.
Spain has historically had a wholesale price floor at 0 €/MWh. This is now being modified to -500 €/MWh in line with other European markets (announced Dec 20). Although very low prices have not been prevalent in Spain to date, this should help battery returns as renewable penetration increases at pace across this decade.
Spain’s Minister of Industry Jordi Hereu applauded the announcement, which he said received public funding from Europe’s post-pandemic recovery plan that includes Spain’s ambitious plan to shift to electric vehicles. “We all have a lot riding on the transition toward an electric transport model,” Hereu told reporters.
