BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — The Slovak government signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday with Chinese electric vehicle battery maker Gotion High-Tech and its local partner, InoBat, to build a car battery plant in Slovakia.
The total investment in the facility is expected to reach EUR 1 billion. Тhe Slovakian firm aims to be able to produce batteries for about 240,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually by 2024. It plans to start building the first phase 100-MWh production line later this year, with the first batteries to be ready for distribution in late 2021.
Europe will see another battery plant come online in 2026. China-based battery maker Gotion High-tech and Slovak startup InoBat plans to build a battery factory in Slovakia. The facility will initially have an annual production capacity of 20GWh. Gotion and Inobat have formed a joint venture, Gotion Inobat Batteries (GIB), for the project.
inobat.eu about „Gotion and InoBat confirm gigafactory in Slovakia“ The joint battery cell factory of the Chinese Volkswagen partner Gotion High-Tech and the Slovakian battery company InoBat in Šurany, Slovakia, will become a reality. The government and joint venture have now signed an Investment Agreement.
The news came after Gotion said in September that it aims to build a battery plant in Middle Europe with Inobat, of which it has acquired a 25% strategic stake. According to the MoU signed on Wednesday, GIB plans to begin constructing the factory in 2024. The Slovak government will offer subsidies to the project and arrange the land.
InoBat Auto, the Bratislava-based battery maker with plans for a 10-GWh plant, has secured funding from the Slovakian government for a research and development (R&D) facility. This forms part of the EUR-100-million (USD 111.8m) first-phase fundraising in support of the ambitious Gigafactory project, InoBat said on Monday.
