There are a variety of current sensing technologies that can monitor the status of an HEV or EV battery. The solution varies with the voltage and capacity of the battery. As shown in Figure 1, there are two main locations where you can measure current: top of stack (high-side sensing) and bottom of stack (low-side sensing). Figure 1.
A high voltage power supply can be used to provide higher common mode voltage. A current meter (AM1) is used to measure actual current flowing through shunt resistor.
The battery output current and battery voltage must also be measured in this kind of monitoring system to diagnose any fault conditions. This design provides a unique solution of current monitoring and voltage measurement with an isolated acquisition system for this automotive battery pack application.
High-voltage batteries for automotive systems are defined as those with ≥ 60 V. Onboard chargers or external DC converters are used to source the power. Meanwhile, high-voltage batteries are used to store that energy.
Another approach to high-side current measurement is represented by ICs that contain all functions necessary to perform the measurement.
