How important is a battery pack to prevent premature aging?

The surrounding overall system - pack or vehicle - is relevant in that it defines the boundary conditions to which the battery cell is exposed. Therefore, to prevent premature aging, the influences of the critical factors must be uncovered and specifically translated into hardware design and operational strategy requirements.

How does aging affect battery performance?

Over the lifetime of a battery, a variety of aging mechanisms affect the performance of the system. Cyclic and calendar aging of the battery cells become noticeable as a loss of capacity and an increase in internal resistance.

Why do batteries self-discharge?

Charging the battery reverses the flow of the charged ions and returns them to the anode. Previously, scientists thought batteries self-discharge because not all lithium ions return to the anode when charging, reducing the number of charged ions available to form the current and provide power.

How does battery aging affect cyclable Lithium?

Externally, battery aging is noticeable as a measurable loss of capacity and increase in internal resistance. Behind this are a variety of chemical reactions and physical phenomena that influence the available amount of electrode active material or of cyclable lithium. Figure 2 gives an overview of the mechanisms and influencing factors.

How long do EV batteries last?

But these batteries have even higher rates of self-discharge, which is when the battery’s internal chemical reactions reduce stored energy and degrade its capacity over time. Because of self-discharge, most EV batteries have a lifespan of seven to 10 years before they need to be replaced.

What happens if a battery reaches the end of life?

If the SoH C falls below a value of 70 to 80 %, the battery has reached the End Of Life (EOL) for automotive applications, but can still be used as stationary storage. How fast and how much the battery ages depends on many factors. The cell, its design and materials are the main causes of aging.
