To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current study is the first to investigate adapting Aspergillus niger to enhance the solubilization of metals from spent lithium-ion mobile phone batteries. In this investigation, Aspergillus niger was initially adapted to heavy metals from spent LIBs.
Lithium batteries can pose safety risks under certain conditions. The primary concern is thermal runaway, a situation where the battery overheats rapidly. Improperly managed, a lithium-ion battery will reach a "thermal runaway" state more easily than other types, such as lead-acid batteries.
In this research, we examined the fungal bioleaching of spent mobile phone batteries in laboratory-scale using A. niger through one-step, two-step and spent medium bioleaching.
When comparing battery safety, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are generally safer than Ternary Lithium (NMC) batteries. Ternary lithium powerpack is geared with an anode composed of oxides, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. When temperature surpasses 180 °C, the anode decomposes and produces oxygen in quantity.
Thermal Resilience: LiFePO4 batteries are highly resistant to thermal runaway, a major safety concern with lithium batteries. They remain stable at high temperatures, significantly reducing the risk of fires or explosions. Chemical Stability: The iron phosphate cathode is more chemically stable than other lithium-ion chemistries.
Bioleaching of spent lithium-ion mobile phone batteries using Aspergillus niger was studied. The highest metal recovery yields were obtained in spent medium bioleaching. Leaching using biogenic acids had higher metals recovery than chemical leaching. HPLC results indicated citric acid plays an important role in bioleaching of LIBs.
