The first terrestrial application was in 1973 (the 15 Wp solar-powered navigation light in Tianjin Harbor). During the 1980s, China introduced several photovoltaic (PV) cell production lines from the United States, Canada, and other countries, which eventually formed the solar PV industry in China .
This development plan is basically in accordance with the current status of solar PV application in China as large-scale PV (LS-PV), BIPV & BAPV, and rural electrification constitute the major market of solar PV, as shown in Fig. 1.
So far, China's policy for solar energy is mainly manufacturing-oriented, and the astonishing boom of PV industry is attributable to its policies specifically for renewable energy, and more generally, for manufacturing .
The program used a mixture of small hydro, PV, and wind power. This program significantly affected the development of the PV industry. China built several solar cell packaging lines and the production capacity of solar cell module reached 100 MW promptly .
In order to develop economically by sustaining its own energy demand without harming the environment, the Chinese government has the incentive to support the development of solar power generation. China started research on solar cells in 1958, which were first applied on the satellite Dongfanghong no. 2 in 1971.
For instance, with the help of the Global Environment Fund and the World Bank, the Chinese government implemented the Renewable Energy Development Program (REDP), which was designed mainly to promote household solar PV systems in the nine provinces of western China. From 2002 to 2007, more than 400,000 PV solar home systems were installed .
