Capacitor Color Codes for Identification Chart Capacitors may be marked with 4 or more colored bands or dots. The colors encode the first and second most significant digits of the value, and the third color the decimal multiplier in picofarads. Additional bands have meanings which may vary from one type to another.
For example: 1st Color Band = First Number of Value of Capacitor. 2nd Color Band = Second Number of value of Capacitor. 33rd Color Band = The number of Zeros (as multiplier) with the first two digits of capacitor (In numbers). 4th Color Band = Tolerance in percentage. 5th Color Band = Temperature coefficient. Let’s see one more example, This capacitor has 224 written on it which gives the capacitance value of 22 x 10 4 = 220000pF or 220nF. This type of electrolytic capacitor are made of aluminum used for power supply and switching DC circuits. The color code for this capacitor is written on the body as capacitance value and the voltage.
The value of the capacitor alone is provided in picofarads when a two-number code is used; for instance, 47 = 47 pF and 100 = 100 pF, etc. The two value digits plus a multiplier make up a three-letter code, just like the color codes for resistors in the resistors section.
Color codes for non-polarized mica molded and polyester capacitors like ceramic and disc capacitors are an old school method (BS-EN 60062) and hence replaced by the capacitor marking ( BS-1852 Standard) with alphanumeric codes.
Every capacitor has a special marking printed on its body. It represents the value or colour code of capacitor. There are different types of capacitor and each has its specified capacitance value, voltage rating, temperature range, tolerance and life time. But most of the capacitors have their value and their voltage printed on their body.

Electrolytic capacitors use a chemical feature of some special metals, historically called valve metals, which can form an insulating oxide layer. Applying a positive voltage to the tantalum anode material in an electrolytic bath forms an oxide barrier layer with a thickness proportional to the applied voltage. This oxide layer serves as the dielectric in an electrolytic capacitor. The properties of this oxide layer are compared with those of a niobium electrolytic capacitor oxide l…
