Currently, no tank-type capacitor is matched in Addis Ababa power system. From the data available, there is no earthquake over five degrees of Magnitude in Ethiopia, especially in the Addis Ababa Capital Region.
According to the interview with the EEP and JICA Study Team, there is no problem with the 132kV operation voltage in Addis Ababa's power system. However, the tank type capacitor is not currently matched in the system.
In Ethiopia, the electricity sector underwent significant changes. The electricity law (Electricity Proclamation No.86) was amended in 1997, leading to the privatization of the power utility as Ethiopia Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) and the liberalization of the power generation sector.
An Amorphous Transformer is suitable for Ethiopia, as it has a maximum capacity of 1500MVA and can cope with future capacity growth. Tank type capacitors are not suitable for Ethiopia due to the absence of earthquakes in the country.
The JICA Study Team conducted a field survey to examine the acceptability of using an Amorphous Alloy Core Transformer (AMT) in Addis Ababa by grasping the type and amount of transformers used in the metropolitan area and their usage situation. The results are shown in Table 4-1.
