Over a gigawatt of bids from battery storage project developers have been successful in the first-ever competitive auctions for low-carbon energy capacity held in Japan. A total 1.67GW of projects won contracts, including 32 battery energy storage system (BESS) totalling 1.1GW and three pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) projects totalling 577MW.
Singapore has surpassed its 2025 energy storage deployment target three years early, with the official opening of the biggest battery storage project in Southeast Asia. The opening was hosted by the 200MW/285MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project’s developer Sembcorp, together with Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA).
China’s major grid companies followed by stating they would not carry out grid-side electrochemical storage investment, leasing, or contract energy management, nor would they construct new pumped hydro storage projects.
Australia’s storage projects have historically focused on standalone BESS, but in recent years, there has been a rise in projects involving solar and wind coupled with BESS that are expected to be commissioned in the next two years.
With just one project, EMA has achieved and exceeded Singapore’s deployment target of 200MWh of energy storage by 2025. The target was set as part of the EMA programme, Accelerating Energy Storage Access for Singapore (ACCESS), through which the EOI solicitation was held.
At the same time, Beijing’s Chaoyang District continued to provide 20% initial investment subsidies for energy storage projects after energy storage was incorporated into the special funds for energy conservation and emission reduction in 2019.
