Battery storage already provides grid balancing services to the ESO today, and we expect this to increase as batteries are deployed more widely in the future. What is battery storage, and how does it help us to balance the grid?

Removing barriers for energy storage projects, which are discouraging bolder investment decisions in larger battery facilities, could treble the number of batteries serving the electricity grid. It will help bring about storage cells that are 5 times bigger than those currently available.

Grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) enable us to use electricity more flexibly and decarbonise the energy system in a cost-effective way. [footnote 31] As the technology and innovation in battery design, manufacturing, transportation, and deployment evolves, so will the development of additional applications.

Is grid balancing the future of energy storage?

Beyond electric vehicles, the energy storage sector for grid balancing is showing increasing demand projections globally [footnote 100] and domestically. [footnote 101] As shown in Figure 6, demand is due to rise to nearly 10GWh by 2030, and double to 20GWh by 2035.

Our forecasts suggest that it could be as high as 2.30GWh in 2025. The rise of Battery Electric Vehicles means Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) will become important.
