Africa has significant natural lithium resources, and many African countries may contribute to meeting increased demand for lithium and supporting economic growth by engaging in the battery supply chain. This report reviews known resources of lithium and engagement in the battery supply chain across key African countries.
The global distribution of the critical raw mineral resources needed for power lithium-ion batteries is as follows: the front-end key raw material lithium is concentrated in Australia and Chile, cobalt is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Australia, and nickel is concentrated in Australia and Indonesia.
Africa has very little capacity for lithium mineral processing, further refining of lithium chemicals, or manufacture of battery components. As a result, lithium mineral concentrate is typically exported from Africa. Value is added outside Africa and products using lithium-ion batteries are then imported.
There are three aspects of power lithium-ion battery supply and demand: raw material supply, battery production and installation, and market demand, and all three are highly concentrated; the core countries in each link are different. This segmentation puts the development and supply of the entire industry at significant risk.
The power lithium-ion battery has shown a rapid growth trend from both the supply and demand sides. However, the growth rate of the demand side of the global power lithium-ion battery is much higher than that of the supply side, and the annual stock rate is declining.
