Currently, there are very limited methods of safely tackling a fire involving a lithium-ion battery because they burn at extreme temperatures. Even a small one can create “thermal runaway” where one cell ignites the next one in an unstoppable chain.
Due to lithium-ion batteries generating their own oxygen during thermal runaway, it is worth noting that lithium-ion battery fires or a burning lithium ion battery can be very difficult to control. For this reason, it is worth understanding how lithium-ion fires can be controlled should a fire scenario happen.

Even if the battery fire appears to have been extinguished after going into thermal runaway, it can still reignite up to 10 hours after the blaze started. Business owners should place a smoke detector near the battery charging point and keep the number of batteries in stock to a minimum.
For small lithium-ion battery fires, specialist fire extinguishers are now available, that can be applied directly to the battery cells, to provide both cooling and oxygen depletion, with the aim to control fire and reduce temperature to below the level where there is sufficient heat to re-ignite the fire.
CONCLUSIONS Lithium-ion bateries can develop into significant and unstoppable thermal runaway fires so carefully considered measures are required to address the hazards that these pose and the options available to manage such risks.
