What determines the electrical performance of a photovoltaic (PV) solar cell?

The electrical performance of a photovoltaic (PV) silicon solar cell is described by its current–voltage (I–V) character-istic curve, which is in turn determined by device and material properties.

What is PV cell characterization?

Home » Renewable Energy » Photovoltaic (PV) Cell: Characteristics and Parameters PV cell characterization involves measuring the cell’s electrical performance characteristics to determine conversion efficiency and critical parameters. The conversion efficiency is a measure of how much incident light energy is converted into electrical energy.

What factors determine the efficiency of a PV cell?

Several factors determine the efficiency of a PV cell: the type of cell, the reflectance efficiency of the cell’s surface, the thermodynamic efficiency limit, the quantum efficiency, the maximum power point, and internal resistances. When light photons strike the PV cell, some are reflected and some are absorbed.

What are the characteristics of a PV cell?

Other important characteristics include how the current varies as a function of the output voltage and as a function of light intensity or irradiance. The current-voltage (I-V) curve for a PV cell shows that the current is essentially constant over a range of output voltages for a specified amount of incident light energy.

Can a contactless method improve current-voltage testing of silicon solar cells?

A contactless method for current-voltage testing of silicon solar cells is proposed. It may reduce cell breakage and costs. It may improve line throughput and light homogeneity and gives extra information. The method combines four contactless measurement techniques. The proof of principle of the method is successfully demonstrated for 3 cell types.

What is a typical I-V curve for a PV cell?

The current-voltage (I-V) curve for a PV cell shows that the current is essentially constant over a range of output voltages for a specified amount of incident light energy. Figure 1: Typical I-V Characteristic Curve for a PV Cell Figure 1 shows a typical I-V curve for which the short-circuit output current, ISC is 2 A.
