KUQA, China, Aug. 31, 2023 – China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (HKG: 0386, "Sinopec") completed the construction of the Sinopec Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Pilot Project (the "Project"), China's largest photovoltaic green hydrogen production project lately.
According to China’s 2022 strategic plan for green hydrogen, onsite applications in industrial sectors are especially encouraged 17. The coal chemical sector is currently the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen in China 32.
Looking ahead, Sinopec, as China's largest hydrogen production enterprise, will continue advancing hydrogen energy industry chain development in China with the R&D of innovative technologies, a forward-looking roadmap and comprehensive industry layout.
The green hydrogen produced by the Project will supply to Sinopec Tahe Petrochemical to replace the existing natural gas and fossil energy used in hydrogen production, realizing the low-carbon development of modern oil processing and green hydrogen coupling.
It may look no different from the other solar energy stations China has built in desert areas, but the project is part of the Ningdong Energy Chemical Industry Base in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The base consumes 55 million metric tons of coal and emits more than 67 million tons of carbon dioxide every year.
