A large-scale shift to electricity from renewables could deliver 60% of those reductions; 75% if renewables for heating and transport are factored in; and 90% with ramped-up energy efficiency. With electricity becoming the dominant energy carrier, global power supply could more than double, the report finds.
With electricity becoming the dominant energy carrier, global power supply could more than double, the report finds. Renewable sources, including solar and wind, could meet 86% of power demand. The energy transformation would boost gross domestic product (GDP) by 2.5% and total employment by 0.2% globally in 2050.
Together, renewable technologies, energy saving and a different customer outlook are leading to a transformation of the electricity environment. They are causing the value chain to shift, away from large conventional power plants towards local power generation, and a greater focus on distributed energy and demand management.
Figure 2. Comparative analysis of global primary energy supply from 2015 to 2050: reference scenario vs. REM scenario. The path to a sustainable energy future highlights a significant role for the power sector, which is projected to contribute an impressive over 15 Gt to the anticipated 30 Gt emissions reduction by 2050.

Solar Energy: Mapping the Road Ahead aims to provide government, industry, civil society and community stakeholders with the methodology and tools to successfully plan and implement national and regional solar energy roadmaps. This guide’s holistic approach encompasses all solar technologies – solar PV, CSP and SHC.
Pace, CO 2 costs and energy diversity are found crucial across the scenarios. Ambitious paths show competitive costs, ranging between 45.2 and 59.2 €/MWh by 2050. This study presents a novel energy system modelling approach for the analysis and comparison of global energy transition pathways for the decarbonisation of the electricity sector.
