Hungarian tech company Platio has developed a new kind of solar pavement that could be used for outdoor applications in urban environments, homes, office buildings, shopping malls, and public infrastructure projects. The pavement can operate at safe low voltages and can be assembled with 8.6 kg walkable solar tiles, known as Platio Solar Pavers.
A company in Hungary is making solar panels out of plastic waste - then using them as pavements. The Platio team says it can power buildings and electronic devices, delivering solar energy "to places where it was not possible before". Miklós Illyés is one of the three Hungarian friends who came up with the idea back in 2015.
Solar pavement is used as a more general term for paved surfaces that incorporate solar PV technology, of which PLATIO is one example. Solar pavement allows for solar energy generation from driveways, sidewalks, patios and other hardscape areas.
