An increasing number of people are investing in solar energy. More and more homes are having solar panels, or solar tiles, installed on their roofs. Of course, with such installations, the topic of planning permission and building regulations often comes to the surface.

Do solar panels need planning permission?

In most cases, solar panels mounted on a roof or wall of a private house do not require planning permission as they would normally fall under what is referred to as permitted development rights. There are a few conditions that apply if the requirement for planning permission is to be avoided.

Can a solar panel be installed on a wall?

The panels cannot be installed on a wall that faces a highway in a conservation area or World Heritage Site. Panels must not be installed on a property located within the grounds of a listed building. You must notify the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) of the installation.

Can solar panels be installed on a sloping roof?

Solar panels must not be installed above the highest part of the roof, excluding the chimney. Panels should protrude no more than 200 mm from the roof or wall surface on pitched roofs. These conditions will also be satisfied if panels are mounted parallel to the roof on a sloping roof. On a flat roof, they shouldn’t protrude more than 600 mm.
