The first electric car to use the BYD Blade Battery is the BYD Han EV that’ll be available with two battery capacities (65 and 77 kWh). The 65 kWh battery pack will give a NEDC range of 506 km (314 miles), which in WLTP should be around 380 km (236 miles). My guess is that this battery pack is made with 101 or 102 cells.
This improves energy density and allows more batteries in a compact space, with a longer driving range. The 'honeycomb-like aluminum' design of the Blade Battery also provides greater rigidity and safety. The BYD TANG, BYD HAN and BYD ATTO 3 are all equipped with a Blade Battery.
The blade battery is most commonly a 96 centimetres (37.8 in) long and 9 centimetres (3.5 in) wide single-cell battery with a special design, which can be placed in an array and inserted into a battery pack like a blade. It is made in various lengths and thicknesses.
The Blade Battery construction increases that number by 50 percent, so that 60 percent of the battery pack is now dedicated to energy storage. In other words, a battery pack of the same size can now supply 373 miles (600 km) of driving range instead of 249 miles (400 km).
Thanks to LFP (lithium iron phosphate), these cells are more resistant to thermal runaways and fires. It also lasts a lot longer than ternary cells. According to BYD, the Blade Battery would last for1.2 million kilometers (745,645.4 miles).
The space utilisation of the Blade Battery has been increased by over 50% compared with the traditional battery packs, which provides enhanced energy density and delivers longer range. Blade Battery has a long battery life with over 5000 charge and discharge cycles.
