What does a hydraulic accumulator do?

A hydraulic accumulator is used for one of two purposes: to increase the system’s volume at a very high pace or to absorb stress. Its precharge determines the function it will carry out. If the accumulator is utilised to add volume to the system, its precharge must be slightly below the maximum system pressure to allow oil to enter.

Do hydraulic accumulators need maintenance?

There are many advantages associated with the use of hydraulic accumulators, and in many cases you can use them for years without experiencing any significant maintenance issues. However, it is still important to engage in some routine checks and preventative maintenance to reduce the likelihood of such problems occurring.

Are accumulators a maintenance item?

They carry out numerous functions, which include energy storage and reserve, leakage and thermal compensation, shock absorption, and energy recovery. While accumulators present a number of advantages in hydraulic system operation and can provide many years of trouble-free service, they are a maintenance item.

How often should a hydraulic accumulator be inspected?

Diaphragm accumulators usually can be mounted in any position. Hydraulic accumulators should be carefully inspected visually at least once per year, more often in environments unfriendly to steel. Ensure there are no rust spots or cracks in the paint. Look for loose mounting points, worn rubber and any indication of movement during operation.

How long does a hydraulic accumulator last?

All pressure vessels manufactured to these standards are considered to have a finite service life depending on the number of pressure cycles experienced during normal operation. The typical design life for a hydraulic accumulator is 12 years. In many jurisdictions, periodic inspection and recertification is required.

What type of accumulator should I use?

The correct pre-charge varies by the application and type of accumulator. Most accumulators are the bladder, piston or diaphragm type. Follow any recommendations from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), if they are available. If not, the correct pre-charge can be estimated.
