What is coal power in China?

Coal power in China is electricity generated from coal in China and is distributed by the State Power Grid Corporation. It is a big source of greenhouse gas emissions by China. China's installed coal-based power generation capacity was 1080 GW in 2021, about half the total installed capacity of power stations in China.

Is China embracing new coal power?

With new renewable energy installations now capable of meeting all incremental power demand in China, the need for new coal is waning, and there are signs the central government may be embracing this change. In the first half of 2024, China reduced coal power permits by 83% compared to H1 2023, permitting only 9 gigawatts (GW) in H1 2024 1.

Is coal generation increasing in China?

Although the share of coal generation in China's electricity generation mix is declining (from 76% in 2010 to 62% in 2019), total coal generation is still increasing (by 1329 TWh (+41%) from 2010 to 2019) as a result of electricity demand growth (China Electricity Council (CEC), 2020)

Why does China need a new coal plant?

China contends that its coal plants are designed to minimize overall emissions and make it possible for China to use more renewable energy. The government requires that new coal-fired plants no longer be built to run only at essentially full capacity.

Is China building new power plants that burn coal?

Yet there is another side to that rapid expansion, one that is causing consternation in Washington at a critical period of climate diplomacy: China is also building new power plants that burn coal, the dirtiest of the fossil fuels, at a pace that dwarfs the rest of the world.
