In 2023, China's solar power capacity reached 220 gigawatts – as much as the entire world did in 2022, while wind power capacity grew by 66 percent. Overall, China shows firm confidence in the emerging renewable industries and has consistently taken effective actions to promote renewable resource development in recent years.
According to Qin Haiyan, secretary-general of the Chinese Wind Energy Association, clean energy, including wind power, is being preferred in China, not only because it is "green", but also because it is cheaper compared with traditional fossil fuels, including coal.
The report looks at China's current installed green energy capacity, but also makes projections on what's been announced and in construction over the next two years. It finds that right now China has more solar panels installed in large-scale projects than the rest of the world combined.
Today, China has more than 80 percent of the world’s solar manufacturing capacity. The extraordinary scale of China’s renewables sector output has driven down prices worldwide, and this is a key factor in reducing the cost barrier to renewable systems for poorer countries.
