Mine Storage uses two elements to store electrical energy – water and gravity offered by underground mines with high heads. We provide a closed-loop solution using proven pumped hydro-power technology in an underground setting.
In particular, underground pumped hydroelectric energy storage systems (UPHS) constitute efficient and flexible alternatives to deal with intermittent renewable energy sources. In this work, a UPHS is designed using the mine water and the voids of a closed coal mine in Asturias (North-west Spain) as a lower reservoir.
Form a pumped storage power station as the core, and build an integrated base for diesel power generation, gas power generation, and photovoltaic power generation in abandoned mines to provide power protection for production and life ( Figure 7 ). This article summarizes the pumped storage technology and its application and comprehensively analyzes the advantages of the PSPP in abandoned mines from the views of China's renewable energy growing trends, national policies, and underground space distributions in coal mines.
The reservoirs are enclosed underground, so this is referred to as “enclosed” PSAM, as shown in Fig. 7 (b). The China Energy Investment has built underground reservoirs in the goafs of multiple mines in the Shendong mining area , which provides a reference for the construction of all-underground pumped storage reservoirs.
Moreover, the proposed systems can be combined renewable energy storage, such as wind and solar power and with geothermal energy exploitation, taking advantage of the temperature of the deep mine water and also they can be combined with a system of mine water use as a water resource, for drinking supply, agricultural or industrial use.
