Against the backdrop of swift and significant cost reductions, the use of battery energy storage in power systems is increasing. Not that energy storage is a new phenomenon: pumped hydro-storage has seen widespread deployment for decades. There is, however, no doubt we are entering a new phase full of potential and opportunities.
Battery energy storage can power us to Net Zero. Here's how | World Economic Forum The use of battery energy storage in power systems is increasing. But while approximately 192GW of solar and 75GW of wind were installed globally in 2022, only 16GW/35GWh (gigawatt hours) of new storage systems were deployed.
It is of great significance to change the concept of the past in the development of distributed storage in future, that is, transforming traditional energy to new energy, to distributed power supply instead of centralized power supply. Energy storage will take an important part in the power system development in future.
When there is no new energy connection, the system backup only needs to consider the load fluctuation. While when there is new energy connection, the system backup needs to consider the fluctuation of both the load and the new energy, which increases the operating cost of the system.
New-energy generation characteristics The problem of unreliable power supply caused by new-energy generation systems seriously affects the security of power supply in related areas. On 7 January 2021, the peak evening power load in China reached 1.189 billion kW.
On this basis, the challenges faced by the high proportion of new-energy power systems are summarized from six aspects: reliability, stability, economy, data intelligence, flexibility and synergy.
