The state-of-the-art metallized film capacitors can offer an energy density of 1-2J/cm3 using BOPP and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the dielectric. Although various designs and dielectric materials have been developed for capacitor construction, relatively little success has been achieved on further increasing energy density of a capacitor.
Self-healing process Metallized film capacitor is a kind of typical passive electronic components, and its construction is shown in Fig. 1 (a). It consists of two dielectric films on which zinc, aluminum or zinc‑aluminum alloy of <100 nm thick have been deposited. The metallized films are then rolled together around the mandrel.
Dielectric capacitors can be categorized into several types, including film capacitors without electrolytes, electrolytic capacitors that utilize electrolytes, and ceramic capacitors. Film capacitors are made by depositing metal layers with different patterns on both sides of a thin film.
With this technology the electric-field stress may be much bigger than with film capacitors thanks to the metallization self-healing capability. Today the dielectric films that are used are mainly polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
1. Introduction Due to the advantages of the high working reliability, low dielectric loss as well as light weight and the characteristic self-healing performance, metallized film capacitors (MFCs) are widely used in modern power electronic systems , , .
The electric-field stess in metallized film capacitors may be much larger than in film foil capacitors. This is obtained thanks to the ability of the electrodes to self-heal. If a breakdown occurs in the polymer, the current will increase through the defect and on the electrode near the defect.
