A new EU battery regulation, Regulation 2023/1542, was recently approved, and it will not only replace Battery Directive 2006/66/EC but also introduce requirements in many new areas of sustainability and safety of batteries and battery-operated products.
The new Batteries Regulation, which comes into force on 17 August 2023: 1 Applies independently of the origin of the batteries or raw materials. The Regulation introduces changes in four key areas: 1. Sustainability and Safety: Carbon Footprint and Restrictions on Hazardous Substances
The new Batteries Regulation will ensure that, in the future, batteries have a low carbon footprint, use minimal harmful substances, need less raw materials from non-EU countries, and are collected, reused and recycled to a high degree in Europe.
By 31 December 2030, the Commission will assess whether to phase out the use of non-rechargeable portable batteries of general use. The new EU Batteries Regulation is expected to become the global benchmark, surpassing comparable regimes in its efforts to regulate battery sustainability, safety and end-of life management.
The EU Battery Regulation will have a large impact on manufacturers of battery-operated products, appliances, and vehicles, as well as on the whole battery industry. Intertek has more than 50 years of experience evaluating all kinds of batteries, serving developers, manufacturers, and application experts worldwide.
These new guidelines introduce significant changes poised to impact battery producers across the globe, with companies in China and Taiwan being at the forefront of these challenges. Key Highlights of the New Regulations: Beginning in 2027, any power batteries destined for European markets will mandatorily require a "Battery Passport."
