What is Meng & Deysher's energy future?

Meng envisions an energy future with a variety of clean, inexpensive battery options that store renewable energy, scaled to fit society’s needs. Meng and Deysher have filed a patent application for their work through UC San Diego’s Office of Innovation and Commercialization.

Are lithium batteries the battery of the future?

Lithium I batteries are the leading storage contender for the battery of the future, but some scientists believe that we need something even better. Shirley Meng: We are searching for the best solution for large scale grid storage, because to help the society to transit into renewables, our lithium batteries may not be the ultimate answer.

What's new in solid state battery research?

Shirley Meng: We had one or two very interesting breakthroughs in the last few years when we are doing solid state battery research. Paul Rand: In one of the biggest breakthroughs, Meng was able to build a solid state battery with an anode made out of silicon, a material with 10 times the energy density as the graphite anodes used today.

What is the laboratory for energy storage and conversion (LESC)?

The goal of the Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion (LESC), at the University of California San Diego Nanoengineering department and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, is to design and develop new functional nano-materials and nano-structures for advanced energy storage and conversion applications.

When were lithium batteries invented?

Shirley Meng: Lithium metal batteries is invented actually back 50 years ago, half a century ago. Paul Rand: But because the lithium and the metal combination was more complex, the technology didn’t originally work out. Shirley Meng: We just have lithium metal to act as connective electrode.

How much energy does a lithium ion battery take to produce?

Shirley Meng: Lithium ion batteries actually take a lot of energy to produce. One kilowatt hour of lithium iron batteries take about 50 to 60 kilowatt hour to produce it. So the energy used to produce those batteries matters, because battery itself is not a renewable.
