[CHINA NEWS SERVICE] A renewable energy power project, one of the many being set up in the Gobi Desert and other arid regions, became the first to be connected to the electricity grid and started generating power on Tuesday, said its operator China Energy Investment Corp, or China Energy.
The first solar units from CHN Energy’s 1GW offshore PV project have connected to China’s energy grid. Developed by CHN Energy’s Guohua Energy Investment, the offshore PV project is located 8km off the eastern coast of the city of Dongying and spans approximately 1,223 hectares.
China Three Gorges also connected 1 GW of solar in the Kubuqi Desert, near Ordos, in North China's Inner Mongolia region. The facility is connected to 150 MW/300 MWh of battery storage. The plant is the first batch of a 16 GW hybrid wind-solar power project that includes 8 GW of PV and 6 GW of wind capacity.
Indeed, China is leading the way in renewables development. In July 2024, new data from Global Energy Monitor (GEM) found that China is building almost twice as much wind and solar energy capacity as every other country in the world combined, with 180GW of utility-scale solar and 159GW of wind power already under construction.
One of the PV facilities – located near Golmud, Qinghai province – has a capacity of 900 MW. It is part of a 2.1 GW solar project that includes 200 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP), which is part of a 100 GW wind-PV project that Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in December 2022.
The newly added installed capacity of wind power rose to 10.4 million kW while that of solar power rose to 33.66 million kW, it said. In the first quarter, China's total installed capacity of renewable energy reached 1.26 billion kW, including 376 million kW of wind power and 425 million kW of photovoltaic power.
