Research on corrosion in Al-air batteries has broader implications for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with aluminum components. The study of electropositive metals as anodes in rechargeable batteries has seen a recent resurgence and is driven by the increasing demand for batteries that offer high energy density and cost-effectiveness.
It surpasses lithium by a factor of four and sodium by a factor of seven, potentially resulting in significantly enhanced energy density. These batteries, now commonly referred to as aluminum-ion batteries, offer numerous advantages.
To meet these demands, it is essential to pave the path toward post lithium-ion batteries. Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs), which are considered as potential candidates for the next generation batteries, have gained much attention due to their low cost, safety, low dendrite formation, and long cycle life.
However, we must mention that a direct comparison of Li-ion technology with Al systems is not totally fair. Indeed, while lithium technology is a well-established system with 30 years of intensive research and development and billions of dollars of investments, aluminum systems are in a primordial stage with many open questions to be answered.
In some instances, the entire battery system is colloquially referred to as an “aluminum battery,” even when aluminum is not directly involved in the charge transfer process. For example, Zhang and colleagues introduced a dual-ion battery that featured an aluminum anode and a graphite cathode.
And because the battery potential now exceeds its stable operating potential window, the surface Li + ions reacts with the electrolyte to generate a thicker SEI layer, which in turn increases internal battery resistance.
